# Responsible Wildlife Ethics

## Labels do not prove welfare or conservation

### Words such as sanctuary, rehabilitation, conservation, education, breeding and non-profit

can sound reassuring, but they do not by themselves explain why an animal is there, how it is managed or what its long-term future will be. Ekala looks below the label.

#### Negatives at a glance

**Commercial does not equal unethical**A business model alone tells us very little about animal welfare.

**Non-profit does not equal good**Registration or marketing language is not proof of responsible practice.

**Interaction needs context**Touching or feeding is not automatically good or bad; purpose, control and welfare matter.

**Wild safari is different**This page evaluates managed/captive wildlife; Responsible Safari Ethics governs conduct with wild animals.

Ask why the animal is there

### Origin and purpose matter

A responsible evaluation begins with questions about how the animal arrived, why it cannot or does not live in the wild, whether breeding occurs and what happens to animals over the long term.

Ekala does not accept a conservation claim simply because it appears in promotional material.

Interaction is not a simple yes-or-no test

### Context determines whether an interaction has value

Controlled educational interaction may be defensible in some circumstances, while the same-looking activity elsewhere may exist largely for entertainment or commercial handling. Welfare, stress, management and the purpose of the programme all matter.

Ekala therefore avoids blanket claims that every touch is abuse or every sanctuary interaction is conservation.

Captive-bred lions require particular caution

### Release claims should not be used casually

Commercially captive-bred lions in South Africa should not be marketed to tourists with the suggestion that the animals they see will later simply be released into the wild. Rewilding this captive-bred population is not regarded as a viable conservation pathway.

Ekala therefore treats release and conservation claims around captive lions with particular scepticism.

Ekala supports selected facilities, not labels

### Long relationships help, but current practice still matters

Ekala has long-standing direct experience with selected wildlife facilities, including Cheetah and Elephant Sanctuary programmes. Familiarity gives context, but it does not replace the need to consider how the operation functions now.

Where a facility’s principles or practices materially changed, Ekala would reconsider whether it remains appropriate to support.

Rescue and lifetime welfare can be legitimate goals

### Not every sanctuary has to claim species conservation

An animal that cannot responsibly return to the wild may still need suitable long-term care. Rescue, welfare and education can therefore be valid purposes even where the programme does not contribute directly to wild-population conservation.

This is particularly relevant when discussing primates that entered the pet trade and later require lifetime sanctuary care.

### Cheetah Sanctuary

### Commercial Game Parks

### Responsible Cheetah Ethics

The Cheetah Sanctuary ethical management is paramount to ensure the well-being of the animals and the integrity of conservation efforts. It is essential that the sanctuary operates under strict guidelines that prioritize the natural behaviours and habitats of cheetahs.

#### Responsible judgement should remain evidence-led

### No facility is made responsible by a slogan

Ekala would rather explain the questions it asks than tell clients that a particular label guarantees ethical practice. That approach also allows current practice to be reassessed rather than treating an old reputation as permanent.

The objective is informed judgement, not virtue-signalling.

Private planning rather than fixed packages

### The available time still controls what can be done

Ekala confirms the service, available time window and any genuinely fixed booked components, but does not need to publish a minute-by-minute route for a private day.

The guide uses professional judgement within the agreed time to give the strongest realistic understanding, while major client-requested changes remain subject to feasibility and any fixed third-party arrangements.

##### Ask about the wildlife experiences Ekala will and will not support

If a wildlife facility matters to your itinerary, Ekala can explain how it fits our current approach and whether it adds genuine value to the wider journey.
