Closed Vehicle Safari

Private describes who shares the safari — not necessarily the vehicle type

For one to three guests, Ekala’s closed vehicle can provide an exceptionally personal safari. For larger private groups, a private open safari vehicle normally gives better game viewing. In Kruger only, Ekala’s closed vehicle may then operate in support where the journey structure makes that valuable.

At a glance

1–3 guestsClosed vehicle can be an excellent actual safari vehicle.
Two parents + two young childrenCan also work, with one parent and the two young children sharing the rear seat; “young” is important.
4+ larger guestsNormally better in a private open safari vehicle so everyone has proper sightlines.
Support vehicleA separate Ekala support vehicle is a Kruger-only advantage, not a Pilanesberg model.

Private does not mean closed

A private safari means the booking party is not mixed with unrelated guests

Ekala may use either a closed vehicle or a private open safari vehicle depending on group size and the quality of the game-viewing experience. The vehicle is chosen to serve the client properly, not because one format is automatically more private than another.

Ekala also uses properly licensed tourist transport and does not deliberately substitute informal unlicensed private cars for paying clients.

Closed vehicle for small parties

One to three guests can work exceptionally well

The closed vehicle allows continuous conversation, weather protection and close guide/client communication. It can be particularly strong for a solo traveller, couple or party of three.

Two parents with two young children can also work because one parent and the two young children can share the rear seat. This should not be generalised to four adults or larger passengers.

Larger private groups need better sightlines

Family closed vehicle safari

An open safari vehicle is normally the better game-viewing tool

Once the party becomes larger, passengers in a conventional closed vehicle begin blocking one another’s views and photographic opportunities. A private open safari vehicle normally solves that while keeping the safari exclusive to the booking party.

The choice is about safari quality, not about abandoning the private-tour principle.

Kruger-only support vehicle

Private closed safari in reserve

The supporting closed vehicle has real value where the journey moves through the park

In Kruger, Ekala’s closed vehicle can carry luggage, support movement between accommodation points and assist an individual guest or young child who needs to return to the lodge without automatically ending the rest of the group’s private open-vehicle safari.

This support-vehicle model is not a Pilanesberg advantage. Pilanesberg’s comparatively easy return to lodge or exit means a second vehicle adds little value there.

Visual impairment — closed is the normal Ekala choice

Continuous beside-the-client interpretation matters

A visually impaired guest can gain considerable value from animal sounds, smell, habitat change and detailed description of direction, distance and behaviour. Ekala therefore normally uses a private closed vehicle where the guide can remain immediately beside the client.

This is based on real Ekala safari experience but remains individually planned; it is not a blanket accessibility promise.

Mobility and vehicle access

A seated safari is not automatically wheelchair accessible

Ekala vehicles do not have roll-in wheelchair ramps or lifts, and Ekala personnel do not physically lift or manually transfer clients. The client must be able to transfer into an ordinary vehicle seat independently or with assistance supplied by their own companion/carer.

Chair dimensions, weight, luggage and the client’s actual functional ability must be supplied from the enquiry stage so the correct vehicle arrangement can be assessed before booking.

Open-vehicle rules still apply when that format is used

Vehicle choice does not change wildlife conduct

Guests remain seated whenever an open safari vehicle is moving and follow the ranger or guide at sightings. Stillness and quiet can be essential, particularly when animals are close or sensitive to movement.

A private open vehicle remains subject to exactly the same reserve and wildlife rules as any other responsible safari vehicle.

Pilanesberg Safari

Use the closed vehicle as the actual safari vehicle for suitable small private parties.
