Lesedi Cultural Village – multicultural village

Lesedi is located in the rocky Magaliesberg hills 45 minutes from Johannesburg. The Lesedi Cultural Village is a multicultural village developed as a tourist attraction in 1995.

Lesedi meaning “light” features the tribal villages, ancestral traditions, history and then local culture.

Additionally including the art, song and dance of five distinctly different cultural villages:

Zulu (warrior nation) is largest South African ethnic group.  Lived mainly in KwaZulu-Natal Province of South Africa. Their houses are characteristic beehive huts.

Xhosa (proud nation) is a group of people originally from the southeast region of South Africa. Their traditional crafts include beadwork, weaving, and pottery and their houses identified as a thatched hut with distinct white blankets.

Pedi (warm hearted nation) refers to a ruling group which established its dominance over other groups of Northern Sotho in the 18th century.

Additionally to the culture and lifestyle of that group. They are described as rhythmic musicians.

Basotho (mountain dwelling nation) is a population native to Lesotho. While being well-known for their coloured blankets and straw hats.

Ndebele (artistic nation) is a group made up of tribes of people living in South Africa and Zimbabwe. They are famous for their colorfully crafted homes.

Alternative to Lesedi Cultural Village:
Mapoch Ndebele Cultural Village.

Ndebele Village

Indeed an alternative to Lesedi Cultural Village.

Mapoch Ndebele Village: Built originally by the Mapoch Ndebele after relocating to the area during the time of forced removals by the Apartheid Government.

While the Mapoch Ndebele cultural Village is acknowledged for its cultural interaction with guests.

The Ndebele Villages live in a traditional manner and practice age old customs and culture. Multi-coloured Ndebele houses and structures colourfully painted and decorated in traditional geometric designs, for which the Ndebele are famous.

Passed down from one Ndebele generation to another – mother to daughter, each mural unique. The Ndebele village is excellent for beadwork artifacts, made by the Ndebele.

This village alternative does however not work well to include other items to make a full-day tour. Also, only covers one culture, where Lesedi includes Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele, Sotho, and Pedi.

Thus recommend Lesedi Cultural Village as the preferred day tour cultural option.
