It changes through language, family life, food, music, belief, migration, work, education, faith, memory, and daily experience. Our cultural tours are designed to help guests understand this living reality rather than reduce culture to costume, performance, or simplified identity.

This is especially important in a country as diverse and complex as South Africa.

Avoiding Poverty Tourism

Ekala does not support poverty tourism.

We do not visit communities so that guests can observe hardship from a distance. We avoid intrusive routes, insensitive photography, and experiences that present poverty as the main point of interest.

Where township, urban, or community areas are included, the focus is on history, dignity, resilience, identity, social context, and the realities that shape people’s lives.

Respectful Photography

Photography must be handled respectfully.

Guests are guided on when photography is appropriate and when it is not. People should not be photographed as objects of curiosity, and children should never be treated as photo opportunities.

In some places, photography may be limited or discouraged depending on context, privacy, safety, or cultural sensitivity.

Local Voices and Community Context

Where appropriate, Ekala includes local guides, community participants, or site-based interpretation.

This helps ensure that cultural experiences are not only explained from the outside. Local participation can add depth, accuracy, and lived perspective, while also helping ensure that communities benefit more directly from responsible tourism.

This is especially relevant in places such as Alexandra, Soweto, and selected cultural sites.

Cultural Villages and Representation

Cultural village experiences need careful explanation.

They can provide useful introductions to architecture, language, music, food, and traditional practices, but they are also structured visitor experiences. Guests should understand what is symbolic, reconstructed, performed, simplified, or interpretive.
