Introduction

Ekala Eco Tours is a private, specialist tour operator focused on helping travellers understand South Africa — its history, its people, its landscapes, and the connections between them.

We design and guide journeys that are personal, considered, and rooted in real experience, offering a level of depth that goes beyond conventional travel.

Who We Are

Ekala is personally managed and operated by Janet, Malcolm, and Linda.

Janet and Malcolm are highly experienced, registered specialist guides — a distinction that reflects not only formal qualification, but decades of interpretation-led guiding across South Africa’s history, culture, and natural environments.

With over two decades of professional guiding experience and six generations of local roots, their understanding of South Africa is both lived and developed over time — not simply learned in isolation.

Linda oversees the day-to-day running of the Ekala Guest House and plays an integral role in the overall guest experience. As host and chef, she ensures that each stay is comfortable, personal, and thoughtfully managed — with meals and hospitality that are consistently remembered by guests from around the world.

Why We Do This

A South African rugby player in a green kit is lifted by teammates to catch a ball during a line-out

South Africa is often misunderstood.

Particularly Johannesburg — a city frequently defined by perception rather than understood in its full historical and social context.

Our role is to:

Provide clarity where there is confusion

Offer context where there are only headlines

Replace assumption with understanding

This applies across all aspects of the country — from its history and cultural diversity to its natural environments.

How We Guide

All Ekala journeys are built around a simple principle:

Context, causation, and consequence — not just events.

This means:

History is explained, not simply described

Wildlife is understood, not just observed

Places are connected into a broader narrative

We guide at a pace that allows this understanding to develop naturally, rather than rushing from one point to another.

Our Approach to Travel

We do not offer:

Group tours

Instead, we provide:

Each journey is structured around your interests and timeframe, within a clear and professionally designed framework.
