Flora, Fauna & Themed Experiences
The garden’s plant collection is rich and diverse, with over 600 naturally occurring indigenous plant species alongside themed and display gardens. These include:
- Cycad Garden – featuring ancient plant species that date back millions of years.
- Succulent Rockery – a collection of drought-adapted plants, visually striking and educational.
- Waterwise Garden – showcasing plants adapted to low-water conditions.
- Fern Trail and Arboretum – offering shaded experiences among ferns and trees.
- Birds and Butterfly Garden – a haven for wildlife lovers.
- People’s Plants Garden & Medicinal Garden – celebrating cultural and traditional uses of indigenous flora.
Beyond birds, the reserve supports small mammals, reptiles and a host of insects, contributing to an immersive ecological experience. Though shy, animals such as dassies (rock hyrax) and even small antelopes can occasionally be glimpsed along quieter trails.
Hiking and Walking Trails: For active visitors, the garden offers several trails winding through different habitats. The most popular is the Geological Trail, a roughly 3.5-kilometre circular route that starts at the waterfall base and leads hikers over rocky ridges, through grasslands and along the Crocodile River valley. This trail, developed with the support of the Geological Society of South Africa, not only provides excellent exercise but serves as an outdoor classroom for understanding the ancient geology of the Witwatersrand.
Because the trails vary in difficulty, they are suitable for a range of visitors — from casual walkers to experienced hikers. Trails are well signed and offer interpretive insights into the garden’s natural history and biodiversity.
Guided Tours: SANBI and private tour operators provide guided nature walks focusing on birding, botanical identification, ecology, and even photography. These enhance the visitor experience by giving context to the sights, sounds and science of the garden’s ecosystems.
Educational Programs: The garden regularly hosts educational workshops, conservation programs, and seasonal events, making it a hub for learning about indigenous South African plants, conservation practices, and ecological stewardship.
